The Industry Night Regio Basel is a striking demonstration of just how diverse, innovative and vibrant the Basel economic region is. It highlights what makes Basel such a strong business location: committed companies, highly qualified professionals and a vocational training system that closely combines theory and practice.
For children, young people, parents and anyone else interested, Industry Night offers a unique opportunity to experience vocational training first-hand. Industry Night is a window into our working world – showcasing real careers and real opportunities for the future.
My tour begins where everything comes into view: at Etavis Kriegel+Schaffner. Without electricity, there is no light; and without light, there is no illuminated industrial night. Here, you can experience energy first-hand: on an electric bike, using state-of-the-art VR technology, or through the fun of building your own switch with a lamp.
From the electricity, the path leads to the Jetz Youth Technology Lab, where children and young people can make their own torches. By soldering and tinkering for themselves, they discover just how much precision and knowledge is involved in technical professions. Early STEM support nurtures talent and opens up pathways to exciting apprenticeships.
A clear understanding is crucial when it comes to career guidance. At Optiswiss, visitors to the Industry Night will gain an insight into the manufacture of spectacle lenses: from biometric measurements to fun activities for children and young people centred around vision.
As well as experiencing the world of craftsmanship in carpentry, manufacturing and engineering, children can print their own T-shirts at the Bürgerspital Basel. And the catering service invites visitors to take a break with food and drink and music, bringing people and professional diversity together.
My tour concludes at the Port of Switzerland in Kleinhüningen, Switzerland’s gateway to international shipping. On board the ‘SSB Wild Maa’, families can discover the world of shipping, logistics and freight forwarding. The Rhine ports symbolise the international connectivity of the Basel region – and the skilled workers who ensure, day in, day out, that the flow of goods runs smoothly. For me, this tour really brings home the point that vocational training is practical, varied and full of opportunities. The Industry Night offers valuable insights and helps young people and their parents – who play a key role in guiding them through their career choices – to make informed decisions.
