Industrial sites (Part 3/3): The distribution network

What lies behind Basel as a business hub? The podcast “Überall Geschichte!” sets out on a journey of discovery across three episodes.

Getting goods to arrive is one thing. Getting them to the right place at the right time is another – and one that has been a concern for Basel’s economy for centuries.

In this third and final special episode, produced in partnership with Industrienacht Basel, the podcast “Überall Geschichte” explores the history of Basel’s distribution networks. From Louis Danzas, who in the 19th century channelled military logistics into civilian use, through the rise of the pallet as a global standard unit, to the just-in-time principle, which today permeates bakeries just as much as pharmaceutical giants. And finally: what happens when these networks break down – and why global crises suddenly reveal what has been working behind the scenes.

For those looking for more to do: at the Industry Night Regio Basel on 24 April, 50 companies and businesses from the region will be opening their doors – including many on the Dreispitz site.
