Industrial sites (Part 2/3): The Dreispitz site
What lies behind Basel as a business hub? The podcast “Überall Geschichte!” sets out on a journey of discovery across three episodes.
Right in the heart of Basel, between Rotterdamstrasse and Florenzstrasse, lies an area that looks like a city within a city – and which, until a few decades ago, almost no one from outside was allowed to enter.
In this second special episode, the podcast “Überall Geschichte” explores the history of the Dreispitz site. From Christoph Merian’s fields, through its rise to become Basel’s most important warehouse, to the duty-free warehouse – a special legal zone that served both global trade and Swiss protectionism. And finally: the transformation of the last twenty years, which has turned the sealed-off industrial site into an open urban quarter.
For those looking for more to do: at the Industry Night Regio Basel on 24 April, 50 companies and businesses from the region will be opening their doors – including many on the Dreispitz site.
