Tour suggestion by Elisabeth Schneider-Schneiter

My personalised tour is a journey through the strengths of our region: research, energy, craftsmanship, logistics – and to round it off, a taste of local specialities.
I’m starting at Bachem. The programme item ‘Wonders of the Lab’ and the behind-the-scenes look at active ingredient production impressively demonstrate just how much precision, expertise and potential for the future the Basel Life Sciences Region has to offer. It’s fascinating to see that chemistry and research aren’t abstract concepts, but make a very tangible contribution to helping patients.
After that, I’ll be moving on to EBL. Energy is one of the major issues of our time – for households, businesses and our business location. I find the programme items on the future of energy, electricity trading and renewable energies particularly exciting. Here, it becomes clear just how complex security of supply is and how important innovation and regional expertise remain.
For the third stop, I deliberately include a craft business, such as Büchi or Wahl Glas- und Metallbau. After all, industry isn’t just about high-tech in the laboratory, but also about skill, experience, an understanding of materials and precision. Seeing how a piece of furniture, a kitchen or a glass-and-metal structure takes shape from a plan really highlights just how valuable vocational training and the dual education system are to our economy.
If there’s time left, I find a detour into the world of logistics particularly fascinating – for instance, to the Swiss Post, Planzer or the Lachmatt site. There, you get to experience everything that has to work behind the scenes to ensure that parcels, goods, data or services arrive reliably.
And to round things off? A cold beer whilst visiting the Unser Bier brewery, and more culinary delights at the Metzgerhuus Stadt und Land. After taking in so many sights, a convivial end to the day is simply a must.
